Joe Hewitt is the Assistant Director of CIDCM and the center’s Director of Government Relations. His particular responsibilities include projects funded by government contracts and grants.

His research expertise is primarily in the area of interstate conflict. His recent work has examined the dynamics of international crisis behavior, the relationship between democracy and the onset of international crises, and the characteristics of rivalries involving states that engage in frequent and repeated crises. Much of his research is based on quantitative analyses involving large data collections. He has also worked closely with the International Crisis Behavior project for many years. He added to the project’s data collections with the dyadic-level crisis data set, which identifies all of the pairs of countries that exchanged hostile actions during the course of all international crises in the period 1918-2000.

He has published in a variety of political science journals including International Interactions, International Studies Perspectives, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and Journal of Peace Research.
