CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

The conflict management program is focused on conducting research that is appropriate to the Rwandan context, providing training for NUR staff in research and conflict management, and in promoting a culture of peace in Rwanda. Using results from research conducted by CCM and CIDCM staff, the program will present a number of conflict resolution models emphasizing different kinds of conflict management techniques that may be adapted specifically to the Rwandan and regional Great Lakes context, produce policy-relevant papers, and increase our understanding of the causes and resolution of conflict in the Great Lakes region.

The Centre for Conflict Management (CCM Homepage) was established in 1999 with assistance from the U.N. Development Program. Its mission is to build a culture of peace, tolerance, prevention and peaceful settlement of conflicts in Rwanda through action-oriented research. Four main research areas are explored by CCM staff: The origins, consequences and exit strategies from crisis, with particular reference to the genocide and war of 1994; Techniques and strategies for prevention and resolution of conflict in the Rwandan context; Justice, human rights and governance; and Economic and social dimensions of the conflict and of the reconstruction in Rwanda

The Center for International Development and Conflict Management  (CIDCM Homepage) was established nearly 20 years ago by Edward Azar. Theory building, policy outreach, and linking development with conflict management, are the three core elements of CIDCM's work. The Center is staffed by a diverse and expert team on protracted conflict management and resolution, economic development, human rights, ethics, and religious tolerance. CIDCM supports both policymakers (Track I) and non-governmental activists and organizations (Track II) engaged in preventive diplomacy, early warning and conflict management.
