Holder of Baha'i Chair for World Peace Speaks in London; House of Lords Member Delivers Lecture on Campus

DR. SUHEIL BUSHRUI, holder of the Baha'i Chair for World Peace and Director of the Kahlil Gibran Research and Studies Project, spoke in London on July 17 on "The Perennial Philosophy: The Wisdom of the Arabs." The talk, presented by the Temenos Academy in collaboration with the British Lebanese Association and under the patronage of the Lebanese ambassador to Britain, marks the publication of The Wisdom of the Arabs (Oneworld), edited by Bushrui. The book draws on the vast spectrum of writings from the Arab world, from classical literature and the Qur'an to traditional folk sayings and the writings of Kahlil Gibran.

Bushrui is a leading authority on Arabic and Lebanese literature and the author of numerous books and articles on a variety of subjects, including Arabic, Anglo-Irish, and English literatures. The Baha'i Chair for World Peace is affiliated with the University of Maryland's Center for International Development and Conflict Management (CIDCM). The chair's mission is to develop nonviolent means of conflict resolution through conflict management processes, global education, international development, and spiritual awareness.

On May 31, Lord St. John of Bletso, a member of the House of Lords and an Extra Lord-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth II, delivered the Baha'i Chair for World Peace Eighth Annual Lecture on campus. Speaking on "Environmental Ethics and Public Policy," Lord St. John advocated building consensus to encourage individuals, communities, corporations, and governments to adopt responsible stewardship of the environment and its resources.
