Kyabwe S. and Kibombo R. (1999) Buwama and Nabweru Multipurpose Community Telecentres: Baseline Surveys in Uganda, in Gomez R., Hunt P., Lamoureux E. (eds) Telecentre Evaluation and Research: a global perspective,  Ottawa: IDRC

The article reports of 2 telecentres set up in Buwama and Nabweru Sub-counties in Uganda by UNESCO, ITU and IDRC. The article starts providing an overview of the two sites; it continues describing the methodology used in the survey: pre-visit, sample selection, data collection, and debriefing. About the Buwama telecentre, the author report lack of community involvement and publicity, about the Nabweru telecentre the author reports that the location, a local government building, prevents people to go to the centre, that not much effort to sensibilize people has been done and that the internet connection is very poor. The article goes on describing demographic features of potential users, their attitude towards media, their information needs, mainly education and health. The main findings are a lack of awareness of telecentres function, which are not considered community facilities. The article ends suggesting new services the two telecentres could offer and giving some recommendations.
